Where To Find a Responsible Chihuahua Breeder Who Has Puppies For Sale
So where can you find a responsible Chihuahua breeder who is selling happy, healthy, and good looking Chihuahua puppies?
Good question. Here are the places you will find responsible Chihuahua breeders (you may also find irresponsible breeders here to, so make sure you know how to identify a responsible breeder first):
-
State or National Chihuahua Clubs. State and national Chihuahua clubs are excellent sources of responsible breeders. You can call the clubs and ask them to send you the name, phone number and email address of responsible breeders who are breeding or who currently have a litter.

- Breeders know breeders. If you find a responsible breeder but they have a long waiting list, or no puppies available, ask them if they can refer you to another responsible Chihuahua breeder that they know.
- Dog events. You will find responsible Chihuahua breeders at confirmation, obedience, and agility trials.
- Publications. You can find responsible breeders in newsletters such as the AKC Gazette and magazines such as Dog Fancy and Dog World. Be careful though, a lot of irresponsible breeders can be found in these publications too.
- Veterinarians. Your local Vet will most probably know someone who breeds Chihuahuas and be able to connect you with this person. Just make sure they are truly a responsible breeder.
You can also find many responsible Chihuahua breeders by searching on Google or by browsing the classified ads on many of the large dog sites. But beware, many irresponsible breeders are lurking online. If the breeders you find and speak with do not do all of the things mentioned in how to identify a responsible breeder, do not buy a puppy from them. They are only in it to make a quick buck, not to "better the breed" by producing temperamentally sound, healthy Chihuahuas.
One final word of advice. There is nothing wrong with buying a Chihuahua over the internet, so long as you buy from a responsible breeder. Be extra diligent when checking them out, make sure to see a lot of credentials (copies of health certificates, photos of their litter, references from other breeders who belong to the national Chihuahua club, etc) before buying a puppy from them, to ensure they are in fact a responsible breeder and not a careless breeder or a puppy mill masquerading as a responsible breeder.
